Thanks, Penny for helping to get the word out. Just as we have problems on the national level, we also have them right here in the community where we pay our huge tax bills! This is what it's going to take to solve or, at the very least, minimize the problems of racism all over this country. United, even, in small groups, we CAN make a difference. Love, Helen

Dear Olympia Fields Friends,

Below is a letter and an invitation that I consider to be very important. The letter is from my long time friend and a resident of Olympia Fields. Please read it, decide to participate, share it, and encourage other to participate. We can and should determine our future
and the future of Olympia Fields. We must practice the seven principles of Kwanzaa:
  • Umoja (Unity): To strive for and to maintain unity in the family, community, nation, and race.
  • Kujichagulia (Self-Determination): To define ourselves, name ourselves, create for ourselves, and speak for ourselves.

Ujima (Collective Work and Responsibility): To build and maintain our community together and make our brothers' and sisters' problems our problems, and to solve them together.

  • Ujamaa (Cooperative Economics): To build and maintain our own stores, shops, and other businesses and to profit from them together.
  • Nia (Purpose): To make our collective vocation the building and developing of our community in order to restore our people to their traditional greatness.
  • Kuumba (Creativity): To do always as much as we can, in the way we can, in order to leave our community more beautiful and beneficial than we inherited it.
  • Imani (Faith): To believe with all our hearts in God, our people, our parents, our teachers, our leaders, and the righteousness and victory of our struggle.

Dear Friends and Neighbors,

Eighteen years ago, in 1994, I founded an organization to address some of the concerns that we had as the community was undergoing the transition from being an all white community to an integrated community.Ninety percent of the new residents who moved in were Black; and, many of them felt unwelcome and isolated. It's America's story! As we came in numbers, the troubles began.

When we moved into our home in February, 1969, we were welcomed because we were only the second Black family.Prior to moving in while our home was under construction, we were invited to the Graymoor Landowners picnic.

Additionally, there was very evident discrimination and inequities in our police department, which to this day is not much better as currently, Officer Blassingame is being denied promotion. We had at that time one full time Black officer and one part-time Black officer. Both had been commended for apprehending a robber at the Jewel Food Store on Western and Lincoln.

About the time that our full time officer, Lytheria Oconnor was to have been promoted to sergeant, he was falsely accused of defrauding the Village for billing for time he did not serve.Needless to say, most the Black residents upon learning of this inequity turned out to the Village Board meeting to inquire and protest.

Because of the display of support, the Village Board reversed their erroneous decision and did not indicate in his personnel file what would have been a felony. It was for this reason that I decided that the Black residents needed to know each other and to address any issues of discrimination, thus The Enhancement Organization of Olympia Fields was founded by me in my home on a Sunday evening.

The organization experienced rapid growth initially and we had a group of energetic younger residents who brought a lot of life and enthusiasm and volunteered wherever they could. The group asked me to develop a Mission Statement which we read at every meeting along with our Vision Statement developed as a group effort lead by Gerri Smothers.

We suffered growing pains and had a turnover of presidents.A year later we opened the organization up to our white neighbors who vigorously supported all efforts and recruited heavily.During one administration, our young Black members were disrespected and most left the organization during that time.

Our membership is low and I am determined that we revitalize our organization which is still needed.I have addressed the Village board about their failure to promote our Black policemen, most of whom are either drummed out, feel defeat in lack of advancement or are not given the same opportunities as the white officers, many of whom are recent employees.I also addressed the Board about the lack of minority contractors given general or sub contracts to do the major construction jobs in the Village.

Unless we are vigilant and involved, despite the fact that we are in the majority, we will not get what we are due based on the fact that the highest taxes are being paid by the newer residents who have built the newest and most expensive homes in the Village.

I hope you care enough to come out, join for only $15.00 per household and participate in our FREE, traditional, "Getting To Know You" Gala for Olympia Fields residents on Saturday, January 12, 2013 from 6:00 - 10:00 P.M. at Sergeant Means Park, on Western Avenue in Olympia Fields.

Come look us over, have fun in getting to know your neighbors, join and help us to rebuild an organization that is needed more today than ever.

We once had a very viable Education Committee and Mentoring Program where Rich Central Students, interested in architecture were taken to Brazeley Architectural firm in Matteson and downtown to Skidmore, Merrill, Owens, one of the largest in the world. They were also taken on the architectural boat ride by David Oliver and me.

Mark your calendars and come spend a fun evening.I will be looking forward to seeing you.

Sincerely, Helen L. Burleson (56 Graymoor Lane) 747-

Penny Kerr

TO MY BELOVED CONDUCTORS....  BY HELEN BURLESON

To My Beloved Conductors,

It was 2008 when we came together for a common purpose to help in the campaign to get Senator Barack Obama to become President of the United States of America. We had strong beliefs, fervid determination and a sincere commitment. We, each, in our own way worked in the campaign whether it was at home on the phone, on the computer, passing out campaign literature and canvassing, traveling to nearby states to assist, contributing financially or just saying a prayer.Like most of you, we were unknown to the campaign; but, that it didn't matter, our hearts were in it.I used to refer to myself as an unknown, unpaid, full time volunteer for Senator Barack Obama. Our efforts paid off, because, we, like millions of other Americans saw in him the qualities and characteristics of one we wanted to lead our nation out of the chaos and calamities that the previous administration had gotten us into.We were angry with some of the decisions and appointments he made; but, through it all, we stuck with him and assisted in his reelection.

I have come to think of you as extended family because of the constant communications, the phone calls and two of our Beloved Conductors even came to visit me.Robert Hollis, Ph.D. came from CA and Tyrone Berry of FL, formerly a Chicago resident came to visit over the Labor Day weekend and brought his adult son to attend a White Sox game.We have lost two of our valued members, Eugene Young, Ph.D., a professor at Bradley University and most recently at Jackson State University, where, when he was a student, he was a leader in the Civil Rights Movement. Most recently, we lost Cassandra Cullers, M. D. of Detroit and St. Lucia who worked in the campaign up to the end.Shortly before her death, I was planning to visit her in St. Lucia.

Frankie calls me frequently from VA, Ray calls from AL, Vernon calls from CA, Joe Madison, the Black Eagle, a progressive radio host and Rich Love, the editor of the Long Beach Times send me valuable information. We had a soldier in Alaska who wanted to interview me on his base radio program; but, I was out of town when the call came.I was invited to address the law school students at the U of I Champaign by the daughter of one of our Beloved Conductors, Larry.I used to blog in the Denver Urban Spectrum because one of our Beloved Conductors, Bea Harris asked me to.

Now that we've achieved our goal of helping to get a second term for Our President, we must keep watch to make certain that he lives up to the promises that he made and not cave in to the pressures of the crazies in Congress.

I don't write as often because I'm busy with my two little angels who have now turned 7 and 9.Additionally, I usually have around 4-5,000 letters and I try to read as many as I can.You will notice that I usually try to respond. There are also a number of videos that you send me.

I love hearing from you and hope we will always keep in touch and share knowledge with each other and motivate each other to remain activists because we are the doers and the movers and the shakers.

Merry Christmas, Happy Kwanzaa and Happy Chanukkah, and Happy New Year.

Helen  Burleson

The Role of Board 227 and the District Community in Collaboration and School Improvement

The Role of Board 227 and the District Community in Collaboration and School Improvement

The role of a school board is to improve student achievement levels and to foster a civil, equitable, collaborative approach first with itself and then with the community it has sworn to serve. This collaboration involves full board and community participation, board evaluation of the school district, strategic planning, encouraging community in contributing input in implementing a district vision, and instructional improvements. On April 9, 2013, we must choose a school board who will encourage full board and community participation, not deny and block it. We need a board who is willing to do its job, to periodically review a district plan to review student achievement and build collaborative relationships with key stakeholders at all levels based upon gaining support for student achievement as the district's top priority.

With the board majority, who was last seen looking out for itself, these efforts at school improvement have been blocked. As a result, by the 2010-2011 school year, less than three out of every ten high school students were at grade level. We can change this picture with a new school board on April 9, 2013. Board 227 still hides behind a façade while continuing to block full board and public participation from those who want best for its children and the community. The board majority continues to hide behind a false facade, pretending while actually doing nothing toward school improvement beyond bragging on itself. It continues blocking minority board members in our school improvement efforts and not holding first itself accountable, and refusing to face its responsibility in evaluating the school district. Truth is, they don't know how, but it is a teachable process that is state mandated.

Having the gall and nerve to try to strip duly elected public officials of their right to public participation and thereby robbing the community of its right to be represented in the community's assembly is nothing less than a crime. It is both voter fraud and election fraud. Trying to strip both the community and its duly elected officials of its right to voice, choice and public input into decisions that should be made in the public's best interest is further subverting the democratic process. Leadership still needs public input in decisions that should be made in the public's interest.

As the April 9, 2013 election approaches and as this school board continues to hide, to waste millions of our tax dollars still losing lawsuits foolishly fighting community participation in our courts of justice, we must vote wisely. We need a school board who is about improving student achievement levels , not holding our children, our schools, and our community hostage for over two decades in failure. As we continue to be taxed to death with little to show for it, as tax payers, we want what is in the best interest of children, our parents, and the future of our community, not merely what is in the best interest of four board members.

A MESSAGE FROM CHERYL COLEMAN: BOARD MEMBER, RICH TOWNSHIP HIGH SCHOOL DISTRICT 227

Good Morning All,

It's been awhile since sharing information with you regarding the District 227 School Board.

Update: There are four seats up for the next election, April 9, 2012. Petitions are being circulated by candidates now and must be filed by last date of Dec. 24, 2012.

Expect a large turnout due to the 2nd Congressional District as well as the Mayoral Elections in Matteson, Richton Park, Olympia Fields and please let us not forget our friends in the very controversial election of Country Club Hills. I wish all the best. Due to Dr. Morgan's tribute many have asked If I'm running for office, NO AND I'M NOT RUNNING FOR MAYOR OF MATTESON. (SMILE)

Therefore, this election is very important and If I've never said it before I'm saying it now, Your Help Is Needed! We need to all stick together on the best four people to represent SD 227 for the next four years. This is the most critical election for our school board .

Board Accomplishments:

  • Bronze Award from US News and World Report for Rich East and Rich Central
  • Secured 1 million dollar contract for the current superintendent

Board Current Challenges:

  • Current year 17.9 ACT Score
  • PSAE 33% college ready
  • School Rankings out of 669 High Schools in the State of Illinois:

Rich Central 559 Rich South 544 Rich East 542

  • Reduced 40 plus teachers and 30 plus support staff without a plan to recruit or attract families back to the district.

  • Purchased 4.2mil dollar administration building without any discussion with the community.
  • Failed to purchase or inquire about a field house, pools, indoor track and field, tennis or other athletics activities that are dormant during winter months for SD 227
  • Board President cut off residents from speaking

  • Board Secretary asked a community member to meet in the parking lot to settle a discussion
  • Board Vice President disrespect community member by not using their given name.
  • Board President cut off board members from presenting plans for improvement
  • Board Majority supporter threatens community to the parking lot and threaten that if I don't start voting like the majority..... you get the point

  • Paid out $840,000.00 plus to attorney's due to litigation and the number is growing. Primary cause lack of following process and procedures, lack of discipline.
  • Enrollment: (see youtube Rich District 227)

oSuperintendent's projection was around 4,000 students however, we dropped by approximately 310 children according to the numbers from last year to this year...WE ARE IN TROUBLE!!!!

oEnrollment projected to drop again next year without a plan presented to the board for recruitment. There is more but I think you get the picture. We need change, We need you, We need help!

There will be several small coffees to allow you the opportunity to meet and greet new candidates. Please Rich Township Community Members, join me in getting to know the new candidates. We need to select four people that will bring about change, work better together and not get hung up on what we've always done because apparently it has not worked in our favor yet. This year get to know your candidates. It's not business as usual!

Happy Holidays

Cheryl Coleman

Update of the school board meeting of November 20, 2012

In district 227, the more times change the more board 227's dog and pony shows remain the same.

With an election coming up in April 2013, the school district administration thought that it was important to congratulate and thank Betty Owens and Emmanuel Imoukhuede in public for covertly blocking the school board members who cared from doing our job of assessing district progress, continuous improvement evaluation, and holding the district responsible while protecting their employed family and friends from being held accountable.

Meanwhile, true to themselves, the board majority continued to hide the evidence in public, and then hold both itself and the district harmless and unaccountable, bragging on itself, and insisting that only the board majority, but not the full board, can engage in public debate addressing our plight, with no rebuttal. Meanwhile, away from the public's eyes and in our court system, the board continues to fight and wage war against our parents and community.

In an attempt to achieve the impossible, they continue to try to violate our free speech protections in court in frivolous violations-of-our-freedom-of-speech lawsuits, and try to suppress our community at open board meetings wasting millions of our tax dollars that should go toward improving our schools. This is all done in an effort to prevent the public input that they should be encouraging.

On November 20, 2012, the school board majority, still bragging on itself for doing nothing and still pretending that "We are the best and doing just fine", as less than three out of every ten students were at grade level in the 2010-2011 school year, had achieved the impossible again. At this time, there may be a slight moratorium put on the more blatant and dehumanizing aspects of suppressing targeted board members and community participation at open board meetings until after the school board elections of April 9, 2013.

But this time around, to plug the hole in the district 227 sinking ship, we must act wisely on April 9, 2013. Patrick Henry said it best: "He who does not govern himself wisely will be governed by despots. The greatest way to lose our liberties is to exercise our freedoms irresponsibly!"
