2nd Congressional District Candidate, Robin Kelly has stated empathically that she has not endorsed Betty Owen's candidacy for the Rich Township High School District 227. Just one of the tricks being employed by someone who MUST BE RETIRED. She's been president of the Board for 12 years overseeing the decline and devastation of the lives of children who will NEVER have a second chance to repeat high school and dumbing down the school board and our community's innovative voices for change and school progress.

Our 73% not-at-grade-level high school graduates futures are sealed in terms of getting into the best colleges and even their future employment is at risk.

No Fortune 500 company hires from the bottom of the academic scale; they seek the top performers. REMEMBER WHO YOU MUST VOTE FOR: BASS, MORGAN, MNYOFU AND WOODS, THE CHILDREN'S CHAMPIONS WHO HAVE A SINGLE PURPOSE TO TURN THINGS AROUND AND TO GIVE THESE STUDENTS A WORLD-CLASS, QUALITY EDUCATION TO PREPARE THEM FOR THE GLOBAL COMPETITION THAT THEY WILL BE UP AGAINST.

We, in America, are looking for the best and the brightest, even among immigrants coming into the country. There is NO MARKET FOR DUMB!

Hello All,

When speaking about this election, please let people know that I spoke with Robin Kelly's office and have an email confirmation that Betty Owens have not been endorsed by Robin Kelly.

Please let everyone know to pass the word along that the attached information is being passed out at the polls currently. Please tell them to be very careful as to not to be tricked again by Betty Owens and her crew.

They stop saying they are endorsed by Robin Kelly out loud. Now they open the sheet and point to the endorsement. I saw one of them pointing to the information to voters when they walk up to the polls. One voter I over heard him say, "I like Robin so you guys must be ok, you got my vote"

Hang in there everyone, it's almost over.

Thanks for the email. I am just responding to say I totally agree.

I have applied for several jobs with the district over the last 5 years and am well qualified as a teacher assistant/paraprofessional or substitute teacher (I have a certification for both).

I've even called Selma McDonald myself and they keep sending emails telling me they have chosen a candidate without even interviewing all qualified candidates. How is this?

I am ready to see a new board. Tell me what I need to do. Nepotism, theft, and deceit is not helping the children or the community. My son goes to South and the disciplinary there is awful and the children are doing what they want. Im looking to put my son in Marian. Thanks!

Concerned & Unemployed Voter,

It is rare for incumbents to be replaced, because there are 11 candidates

It is rare for incumbents to be replaced, because there are 11 candidates. It is more likely than not for the incumbents to get more votes and get reelected. There are two incumbents, Dr. David Morgan and Cheryl Coleman that have been working against the "old guard" that has failed our children, schools, and community for twenty years, headed by Betty Owens.

Dr. Morgan

is up for election this term. We set up a committee to vet the candidates, so as not to dilute our vote and selected 4. These selected candidates are:

Dr. David Morgan

Mr. Komaa Mnyofu

Dr. Delores Woods

Mr. Antione Bass

If your group were to back these candidates and they get elected, we would have a majority that would move our district forward and get our schools off probation. These people are honest, committed to educational excellence, listening to our constituents, community empowerment, and do not have conflicts of interest nor do they have friends and relatives who want jobs at 227.

Your suggestion for each voter to study the qualifications of the 11 candidates will fail. And you are already violating your policy when you suggest that voters exclude incumbents from their votes. I have attached a news article from the Southtown and a reply from Mr. Mnyofu that might give you a larger picture.

YOU HAVE AN OBLIGATION TO SAVE OUR CHILDREN, APRIL 9, 2013-Helen Burleson

YOU HAVE AN OBLIGATION TO SAVE OUR CHILDREN, ON APRIL 9, 2013 - Helen Burleson

Get all your friends and neighbors out to VOTE, Tuesday, April 9. Don't let our children down! Because of our ancestors and the sacrifices they made, even with their lives, we owe it to them to make certain that we SAVE OUR CHILDREN. WITHOUT A GOOD EDUCATION, THEY ARE DOOMED AND THE DIE IS CAST AGAINST THEM! GO VOTE! VOTE FOR THEIR FUTURE! CIRCULATE TO ALL YOU KNOW IN RICHTON PARK, MATTESON, OLYMPIA FIELDS, COUNTRY CLUB HILLS, PARK FOREST, CHICAGO HEIGHTS, UNIVERSITY PARK AND TINLEY PARK. WE WILL LOSE ANOTHER GENERATION UNLESS YOU GET OUT TO VOTE FOR THE RIGHT 4: BASS, MORGAN, MNYOFU AND WOODS.

April 1, 2013

To All Voting Age Residents of Rich Township High School District 227,

First, let me briefly tell you who I am and why I'm writing to you. I am Helen Burleson, a 44 year resident of Olympia Fields; but as a landowner 45 years. I do not live in your school district; but, I am a former educator, a mother of a son who's a physician who holds both an M. D. and an M. B. A. and a daughter who holds both a B. A. and an M. A. with high honors.

I participated in the Chicago Public Schools boycott back in the '50's because our Black children were being neglected and mis-educated. To make certain that my own children, who were among a small number of Black students in School Districts 161 and 233 Flossmoor Schools, class of 1976 and 1985 respectively from Homewood-Flossmoor High School, were not victims of racism and neglect, I ran for school board in District 161, was endorsed by Vernon Meidell and Lester Sons as editors of the Star Publications each time I stood for election and re-election.

I was responsible for hiring the first Black teachers, Victor Scottie and Arthur Byrd, a current resident of Olympia Fields. Additionally, I was responsible for having learning centers installed in Serena Hills, Normandy Villa, Flossmoor Hills, Western Avenue and Leavitt Avenue schools in order to make all schools equal to Heather Hills School, the newest in the district with a learning center built in during construction. Leavitt, the oldest school in the district which could not be retrofitted with air conditioning, has been torn down and is the site of Leavitt Park in Flossmoor.

Also, because of fiscal responsibility, District 161 sent only one member of the Board of Education to conventions and conferences. We never sent all members and their spouses or family members. After 9 years, from 1972 to 1981, serving on the Flossmoor Board of Education, I was appointed to the IL State Board of Education by Republican Governor James Thompson, who also appointed me to the Illinois Humanities Council and the Governor's Task Force for Medical Malpractice. I also served as a contributor to the curriculum committee to revise the social studies curriculum for the State of IL.

My interest, my dedication, my commitment and involvement with education has been a passion starting at age 4 when I taught the children on my block in my own little play school on the steps of my home.

Now you can see that it is not unusual for me to be concerned about the children in District 227. My adult philosophy has always been that every Black mother is the mother of all Black children. It is up to us to save our children. We can't sit back and depend on disinterested people to save our children.

When you look at the disrespect shown our first Black president, then you must be able to see what's in store for your children. If Our President and his wife can succeed in some of the top tier, in other words, the best schools in the nation and they can be disrespected, then what about your children. I am trying to get you to see the larger picture, THE BIG PICTURE! Without a good, effective education what will become of them?

Currently the composition of this school board, 227 has members who have served for years and have been both educationally and fiscally irresponsible.

The two exceptions are the newest board member, Cheryl Coleman, who has fought for better education from the first day she became a member of the board and Dr. David Morgan, who has fought the good fight; but, has been disrespected and ignored in all he attempts to do to improve the quality of education of our children.

The rest of the members, Owens, Norwood, Hernandez and Imoukhuede have rubber stamped every ineffective decision, including the purchase of a white elephant administrative building to accommodate 20 - 30 administrators at the same time that the school district is facing a ten million dollar deficit. How does this building benefit the students or enhance their educational opportunities? Not at all!

We have four sincere and dedicated people who must be elected to give our children a chance to receive the educational opportunities that they deserve. Nasty, ugly practices, more like the machine politics of the Daley machine and Tammany Hall are being employed by people fighting to maintain the status quo which harms our children greatly.

It seems that someone fears the election of Komaa Mnyofu, who is one of the most qualified, well informed and dedicated people ever to seek to serve on that board. He is a no- nonsense, straight talker who can't be bamboozled, participate in cover ups and won't be walked on or over. He has fought injustice and unfair practices in this district. He has won! Doesn't that tell you something? He could not win in court unless he were right! That is a benefit and advantage for us for he will ferret out any wrongdoing and will take it to court to be settled by the RULE OF LAW! This is the kind of attribute we need in people who are the stewards of the destiny of our children.

Bringing all of my experiences to the issue, I wholeheartedly endorse and include their positions on the ballot, the following four candidates: David Morgan (161), Delores Woods (162), Antoine Bass (164) and Komaa Mnyofu (168). Give our children a chance for a great future by getting a great education. This you will do when you vote for these 4 candidates. Yours, in the struggle for freedom and justice for ALL,

Helen L. Burleson, Doctor of Public Administration

Letter to the Editor: 227 Rich Township School Board Election

 Letter to Editor

P.O. Box 2110

Matteson, Il 60443

227 Rich Township School Board Election

Because the Thursday Think Tank is comprised of a group of African American professional males who meet regularly to discuss and research issues relating to our communities, we think that the importance of the issues that are occurring in 227 are deserving of our attention.

The premise of our research is what happens in the schools affects quality of life, the value of property and economic development, as well as the quality education the students receive.

The school board purchased a building for $825,000.00 (using the excuse it is cheaper to own than to rent) to be renovated at a cost of around four million ($4,000,000) to be used exclusively as a building to house 20-30 administrators. This led us to question the fiscal responsibility of the board.

District 227 has some of the highest taxes in the Southland for education and spends a whopping $15,534 per student which is an incredible 39% above the state average.

Yet the school is on the "WATCH LIST" of failing schools. Two thirds of the school population does not meet minimum academic standards. ACT scores are an abysmal 17.0 vs. a state average of 20.5.

The board salutes and heralds the talented but what about the average and below average students?

The School Board has seemingly been unable to raise the standards for all students in the district. Declining test scores are the past board's legacy.

Some residents have sent their children to private or parochial schools because they have felt that the quality of education was lacking in the Rich schools. This has been the trend for several years.

The 227 schools were failing long before the charter school came into existence and it has had nothing to do with the failure of schools in the district nor its fiscal woes.

Southland College Prep is located within a high school district where just 30% of the students meet or exceed standards.

The school holds a lottery because the demand for the program is far greater than its enrollment capacity of 125 students who are enrolled each school year. Currently there are twice as many students seeking enrollment as there are number of available openings.

It is not normally our policy to make individual endorsements. However, we are suggesting that the residents and the board make a change of direction.

To accomplish this means that incumbents should be replaced. We caution against voting for teams and recommend looking very carefully at each candidate. Remember that new the board is one that will make the decisions for your children for at least the next three years.

The residents can end ineffective board leadership by electing Four Very Effective School Board Members on April 9th and provide the quality education our young people deserve.

We truly believe that all children can be educated. The school community can determine the future of its children.

The rights of every citizen are diminished when the rights of one citizen are threatened

Response To "SD 227 board candidate collected $340K from District" by Mr. Komaa Mnyofu

This letter is in response to the Sunday March 31, 2013 article by Casey Toner entitled "SD 227 BD CANDIDATE COLLECTED $340K FROM DISTRICT."

First, much of what Mr. Toner has written is a rehash of his 2008 article when he interviewed me in the office of businessman and Olympia Fields resident, Mr. Fred Veazy. At that time Mr. Toner requested to know the terms of the settlement reached in 2008 with the school board. As he indicated in the article correctly and I as stated then, due to the confidentiality agreement between the parties, I was unable to disclose the settlement amount.

In 2008, the district determined that, based upon allegations regarding the conduct of the Betty Owens school board in violating my civil rights, they offered to settle the lawsuit rather than face a trial by jury and expose the district to further risk.

However, true to form, in the district's unethical conduct and campaign to attack and destroy my creditability they joined forces with an adjoining school district and violated the very confidentiality agreement which they signed their names to, in which the board promised to keep the terms of the settlement "confidential" by giving this information to the adjoining district's attorney.

The audio recording of the closed session meeting of the school board played during superintendent Donna Leak's deposition, revealed that the board knew they were violating the confidentiality agreement but did it anyway and knew they would have to pay the $15,000.00 in damages for doing so.

It is peculiar that Mr. Toner appears to suggest that only the press has the right to free speech and the right to pursue redress of denial of free speech rights through the courts. This peculiarity is evidenced by his convenient failure to mention the basis of the two lawsuits against district 227. And what was the basis? The denial of parents, citizens, sitting school board members, and individuals such as myself constitutional rights to freedom of thought, speech, expression, assembly, association, etc.   The same rights that he as a journalist, and his employer, the Southtown, practice and pursue daily.

For the last 12 years, the current school board regime has practiced repression, suppression, bullying, police intimidation, and outright denial of community participation and free speech which has caused our school district to fail.   He failed to even mention that these violations of our community's rights were the only basis of my lawsuits.

Further, Mr. Toner moves from District 227 lawsuits to mentioning that I am also "suing Matteson Elementary School District 162 and the Matteson Police Dept., " suggesting that this article is an all encompassing attempt to further imply that the allegation of violation of Constitutional rights by these governmental units, have no place for citizens to redress these grievances through the courts. Is he suggesting that citizens resort to the "old west" way of settling grievances? I hope not.

He then moves into my personal life involving judges who believe that they are immune from being held accountable for violating people's rights. Finally, he mentions "sixteen lawsuits," which I quoted in my deposition the district attorney's allegations of "sixteen lawsuits."

Mr. Toner's article reflects many of the same types of criticism that were hurled against the Brown vs. Board of Education litigants who challenged race based discrimination in public education---through the courts. After Thurgood Marshall filed this initial landmark case before the U.S. Supreme Court challenging the bigotry, the insidious racism, and discrimination in education against Blacks, hundreds of more lawsuits were filed challenging the same bigotry, discrimination in housing, hiring, voting, educational opportunity, including against Toner's industry, the press, throughout American society.

The pursuit of and exercise of constitutional rights for Blacks and other minorities through the courts has been a time honored approach of the civil rights movement as opposed to the use of violence.

The fact that the discrimination was being conducted by whites during this era, in no way makes it more palatable today simply because it is being done by blacks against their own community. For Toner to suggest that I should not pursue, through the courts, redress of my grievances for denial of these same rights simply because it is being done by blacks is an insult to every citizen in Rich Township High School District 227, no matter their race.

Since Mr. Toner doesn't have one day of training or education as a paralegal or lawyer, I can excuse his ignorance and misunderstanding of the legal terms contained in both my lawsuits. However, I need to make clear his misrepresentation that the district "refused to release information on the first lawsuit it settled with Mnyofu in 2008," due to a confidentiality agreement.

If, as Mr. Toner implies, he had correctly read my recent settled lawsuit, he would have understood that the district, contrary to what he wrote here, in fact had violated the confidentiality agreement from the 2008 settlement agreement. Thus, count three of the lawsuit was headed "BREACH OF CONTRACT."   On that count the judge ruled that the district was in fact guilty and ordered them to pay $15,000 dollars in damages. Apparently, this was an oversight in his research.

Finally, the balance of the article is a hodge-podge of journalistic popcorn and obviously not nonpartisan. When he interviewed me over two months ago for this article, Toner stated that some on the current board were concerned with the cost of legal fees to the district in defending my two lawsuits. Although I pointed out to him with specificity the $873,000 paid to the Scariano law firm in the 2010-2011 school years , the hundreds of thousands of dollars misspent in defending themselves in the Fred Jacobeit litigation settlement, hundreds of thousands spent in a failed attempt to close the charter school, and the millions of dollars misspent by this board over the past twelve years, that it is "laughable" that this board now laments to the press their "concern" for the use of tax payer dollars to pay legal fees.

Apparently, this was also another oversight by Mr. Toner, leading the readers to believe that the millions the board has misspent in defending lawsuits, other than mine, is smaller and of no consequence.  Any intelligent and thinking reader can do the math.

The South Town should look internally at its own faces which report on our communities in District 227 and ask themselves do their reporters and staff reflect the communities in our district?

I have been the most vetted and reported on candidate by Mr. Toner in the history of our District. In an effort to settle an ongoing personal grievance he has against me, this article appears right before our communities April 9, 2013 election to replace the current dysfunctional school board on which he has made his career rise writing about.

After April 9, 2013, we will see if Mr. Toner will have anything positive to say about the turn-around and positive changes the new board will make----the change they can depend on.
